Last weekend while driving my Spitfire home from work, my brakes failed. The pedal went to the floor and no braking! Thankfully it was a fairly slow failure, and I am experienced at using my parking brake.
After I got the car safely home, I took apart the rear brakes and later found that one of the rear brake lines had worn through. It was a rubber brake line and had been resting against the spinning axle. The spinning action of the axle eventually wore it through.
I thought about ordering a new set of steel braided lines online, but instead decided to have some made. I had the new ones made at Earl’s Performance Products. They were kind of expensive ($60) but they sure are pretty! They couldn’t get an end that mates with the steel tube with the same angle, but this one is steeper, and aluminum, so it should mate up just fine.
These lines are made from extruded teflon with steel braid and then another plastic sleeve over that. They installed very easily. They came with the washers and nuts. I also put in some zip ties to make sure they don’t rub on the axle. After bleeding the brakes, now I have really good braking!
